This will be my 6th year Walking to Defeat ALS! This year is especially important as it has been 5 years since my Fathers diagnoses. In celebration of my Father fighting for 5 years and not giving up, I have raised my goal!
Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Over time, the simplest movements of walking, speaking and breathing become virtually impossible. Yet, the individual’s mental function is seldom impaired. The cost for families of ALS patients totals about $250,000 per year but the emotional cost is incalculable. In efforts to cut that cost, the Chapter provides various services free of charge. It is through events such as the Walk that The ALS Association can continue to support the ALS community.
What did last years walk provide for local ALS patients??
• 100 Respite care grants
• over 200 transportation grants
• loaned over 2,000 pieces of medical equipment & 425 pieces of assistive technology equipment
• over 150 support groups & patient care coordinators
• made 1,000 home visits to PALS (people living with ALS)
